Large-scale Infrastructure Project Started at Burgas Airport
On the 1st November Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD – the operator of Burgas Airport (BOJ) - officially launched a large-scale infrastructure project for reconstruction and rehabilitation of Taxiways "A" (Alpha) and "H" (Hotel) at this popular tourism airport on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
The symbolic ground-breaking or turning of the sod was done by Ulrich Heppe, the CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, together with the mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov; the regional governor, Vulcho Cholakov; the director of Burgas Airport, George Chipilski, and a construction company representative.
The project includes rehabilitation of around 50,000 square meters of Taxiway “H” and Taxiway “A”, as well as area adjacent to the runway holding point. Furthermore, the project also includes replacing the control and monitoring system for the airfield lighting and approach lighting at BOJ. The project implementation is crucial for the development of the airport and the entire region.
Fraport Twin Star will be investing a total of 12 million leva in this infrastructure project, which is expected to employ more than 200 construction workers and other specialists. Construction and implementation of the construction works requires BOJ to be closed to flights until December 30, 2016.
For the period from 2006 through 2016, Fraport Twin Star has invested more than 350 million leva at Varna and Burgas airports. Ulrich Heppe said: “During the first decade of our airport concession, we have completely changed the face of both seaside gateways - and we will be continuing this development in the future. This year, our investment program includes a total of 64 projects at Burgas and Varna, with more projects planned for 2017.”
