11th destination for SAS at Aarhus

Network expansion continues at Scandinavia’s fastest growing airport

Upcoming new routes at Scandinavia’s fastest growing airport, in Aarhus, continue to be added as SAS Scandinavian Airlines unveiled its 3rd new international route for 2019 with the addition of Manchester in the UK.  The airport’s first direct link with the northern part of the British Isles and SAS’ 11th destination from the airline’s growing Aarhus base, the new flights will open in April.

“The UK has been one of the strongest growing international markets for inbound travellers to Aarhus”, commented David Surley – Aarhus Airport head of airline relations. “We have seen a continual trend in upward indirect traffic numbers to a variety of UK points and of course Manchester serves one of the widest and most strategically important markets, as a very convenient gateway to northern England.  This route will be popular with business customers owing to significant corporate synergies and also for leisure travellers needing to get to and from the north of the UK”.

Flights will operate by 90-seat Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet aircraft three times weekly with morning departures at 0945 arriving Manchester at 1035 local time, while return flights will leave Manchester at 1110 and arrive Aarhus at 1400.  SAS also operates service to Oslo, Stockholm Arlanda, Munich and Nice with Aarhus-located regional jets and in addition to Manchester from April 2019, SAS has previously confirmed the CRJ-900 type will begin flying to Rome.  SAS will also start new Airbus A320/A321 flights to Faro Algarve from April as part of its Aarhus leisure operations, that also take in Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Split.

“Denmark is a popular fan base for Manchester United football followers and many Danish companies have invested in or operate their UK business from locations across the north of England.  Danish tour operators also feature destinations in the north of the UK such as the Lake District, Yorkshire amd Northumbria among their British tour programmes, plus student and youth travel are sizeable markets”, stated Surley.

He continued by adding “we now have six points on the map that are new for 2019 with Manchester and Varna in Bulgaria being the very latest, joining new destinations of Zakynthos, Chania, Rome and Faro that are already on sale”.

In Q3 2018 Aarhus Airport recrded +110% international passenger growth and a cumulative passenger growth rate of 45.5%, putting the year-to-date growth figure at almost +80% new overseas customer traffic and making Aarhus the fastest growing airport in Scandinavia.
