Velana International Airport Welcomes Air France to Maldives
The maiden flight of Air France to Velana International Airport on 02nd November 2017 was greeted with a water salute followed by an official function at the airport. The function was officiated by the Minister of Economic Development, Honorable Mr. Mohamed Saeed, Government officials, the French Ambassador to Maldives & Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mr. Jean Marin Schuh, the Managing Director of MACL, Mr. Adil Moosa, the Senior Vice President of Air France, Mr. Welmer Blom and the staff of Air France and MACL.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Economic Development, Honorable Mr. Mohamed Saeed cited the significant developments carried at Velana International Airport, including development of the new Runway and Terminal Building that shall enable the airport to cater to the largest aircraft, the Airbus A380.
The French Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Jean Marin Schuh noted that Maldives is a popular destination among Europeans and the commencement of flights to Maldives will not only boost the tourist arrival but also increase cargo shipments between the two countries.
Mr. Welmer Blom, the Senior Vice President of Air France, added that it is an achievement for Air France to commence operations to a renowned destination like the Maldives.
The B777 aircraft equipped with the latest cabins and a capacity of 312 seats will operate two flights a week from Paris to Malé.
