Milan Airports commit to "Zero CO2"

ACI Europe, the association of European airport managers, during the 29th Annual Congress and General Assembly held in Cyprus, officially announced the NetZero2050 Resolution, committing the European airport industry to become net zero for CO2 emissions by 2050 at the latest.
 
To date, the Resolution has been signed by 194 airports in 24 European countries, with the support of various national associations of European airport operators.
 
In Italy, the Resolution, which is also directly supported by Assaeroporti – the Italian Association of airport managers – has already been embraced by ADB (Bologna Airport), ADR (Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports), GESAC (Naples Airport), GESAP (Palermo Airport), SACBO (Milan Bergamo Airport), SAGAT (Turin Airport), SAVE (Venice Airport) and SEA (Milan Linate and Malpensa Airports).
 
SEA is pleased to be part of this project together with a large international network. The airport industry’s continued commitment to CO2 reduction is concrete evidence of how the sector is attentive to issues related to change. The Milan airports have also been actively involved in this commitment for years. They have been part of the voluntary certification program from the beginning, in June 2009, and for over a decade they have been among the most outstanding European airports due to constant work on multiple fronts to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This has earned them 3+ neutrality accreditation, the highest level of achievement for an airport according to Airport Carbon Accreditation.
 
Based on the current traffic volumes at European airports, it is estimated that this commitment will lead to the elimination, in 2050, of 3.46 million tons of annual CO2 emissions.
 
General Director Valentina Lener spoke on behalf of Assaeroporti in Cyprus. “Italian airport operators have always been very sensitive to environmental issues and are strongly committed to actions aimed at reducing air emissions. A number of interventions relating to environmental sustainability have already been carried out by our airports: the use of energy from renewable sources has increased; photovoltaic plants and cogeneration or trigeneration plants have been constructed on the site; reward criteria have been established for operators who pay particular attention to environmental sustainability. In this context, several Italian airports have already obtained the international “Airport Carbon Accreditation” certification and now, with the signing of the NetZero2050 Resolution and with the formal support of our Association, the entire airport system is setting itself the even more challenging goal of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 at the latest.”
