About The Airport
Greenland Airports A/S (aka Greenland International Airports) is the developer and operator of airports in Greenland founded by the Greenlandic government in 2016.
The company is currently constructing three new airports that will significantly improve access to Greenland from North America and Europe:
- Nuuk – Greenland’s capital and growing tourism region (opening 28 November 2024)
- Ilulissat – Major tourism region above the Arctic Circle (opening late 2026)
- Qaqortoq – Gateway to South Greenland’s nature, culture, and history (opening 2026)
All three airports will include new terminals with full passenger amenities. Nuuk and Ilulissat will also have runways extended to 2,200 m.
About Greenland
Greenland is the world’s largest island and hosts more than 130,000 annual visitors. They come to experience incredible natural wonders, exciting adventure activities, and a unique indigenous culture. Greenland is also an emerging destination for its culinary and arts scene. The country is a self-governing autonomous region within the Danish realm and home to 56,000 people. Besides tourism, Greenland’s economy is focused on fishing and a growing mining industry.
Alongside the airport development, significant investments are being made in Greenland’s tourism infrastructure including new hotels and other accommodation, activities, and visitor services. The port in Nuuk is able to accommodate cruise turns, which will increase air traffic demand for passengers and cargo starting and ending their cruise journeys in Greenland.
While Greenland is known as an adventure destination, it accommodates a wide range of visitor profiles:
- Soft Adventurers who look to engage and learn about the nature and culture of Greenland without significant physical activity
- Immersive Adventurers who like to get actively involved in Greenland’s nature and/or culture (e.g. day hikes into the wilderness) but who like coming back to a nice hot meal and comfortable accommodation at the end of the day
- Ultimate Adventurers who really like to immerse themselves in Greenland for days at a time – could be in multi-day solo hike, heli-ski adventures, or local family homestay
