Market Analysis III: Athens Airport’s Top Markets – GERMANY
In the 3rd week of our Market Analysis, we turn our attention to the German market, reflecting the significant role it plays in shaping Athens International Airport’s (AIA) international traffic.
One of the TOP markets for Athens Airport, the German market ranked 3rd in terms of foreign arrivals and 1st in direct traffic in 2023.
For the first half of 2024, the German market is again in the 3rd position in foreigners’ arrivals (Tourism) and 2nd in direct, recording spectacular growth compared to the same period 2023 with +48% and +21% respectively.
When compared to the pre-pandemic era, the growth of traffic from the German market is even more spectacular, with +12% in Direct traffic and +26% in Foreign arrivals.
It is noted however that Germany was the last of the big markets for Athens to recover, as it marginally underperformed in direct traffic in 2023 by -1.5% (vs. 2019) and by -17% in foreign arrivals. Therefore, Germany as a market recovered in late 2023 and has been growing even more in 2024.
The main driver for this significant recovery and growth in traffic is down to the additional direct capacity deployed which increased by 28% in the first half of 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023.
Compared to the pre-Pandemic era (2019), same period, direct capacity increased by 20%.
For 2024, Athens is directly connected to 9 airport destinations with flights operated by 6 airlines – AEGEAN, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Scoot & SKY express – resulting in 150 weekly departures, or 21.4 daily (peak Summer season).
