Market Analysis VII: Athens Airport’s Top Markets – POLAND

This week, we return to Europe evaluating the spectacular growth in the Polish market, contributing to the international traffic growth at Athens International Airport (AIA).

The Polish market ranked 14th in terms of foreign arrivals and 16th in direct traffic in 2023.

Direct traffic for the first 7 months of 2024 is recording strong growth when compared to same period in 2023 at 44% and by 29% in terms of foreign arrivals (Tourism).

As with the majority of Athens international markets, the Polish market is growing above the pre-pandemic era (2019) with 17% in direct traffic and 28% in foreign arrivals, during the period January to July.

This strong growth is driven by significant network developments, resulting in increase of available capacity and connecting traffic from Poland via Athens to the region. Connecting traffic increased by 35% in 2023 when compared to the pre-Pandemic era (2019).

The additional direct capacity deployed at Athens on the Polish network increased by 58% in the first 7 months of 2024, when compared to the same period in 2023.

Compared to the pre-Pandemic era (2019), same period, direct capacity increased by 23%.

In 2024, Athens is directly connected to 5 airport destinations with flights operated by 5 airlines – AEGEAN, LOT, Ryanair, SKY express & WizzAir – resulting in 38 weekly departures (peak summer season).
