6th edition of Brussels Airport Aviation Awards

Brussels Airport awarded the Brussels Airport Aviation Awards for the first time back in 2007. The Awards reward airlines and partners that stand out in terms of punctuality and performance, environment and safety and network and route development.  

During the sixth edition of this event, held on Thursday 28 March 2013, the awards for the year 2012 were handed out.

Punctuality and performance

For passenger airlines, the punctuality criterion is the best on-time performance for arrivals and departures at Brussels Airport, i.e. an actual arrival or departure time within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
For cargo airlines, the performance criterion refers to the number of weekly flights, the number of destinations, the total volume of flown cargo, the volume per flight and the growth recorded in 2012.

Punctuality Award Regional Airline

bmi regional operates seven flights a week to Edinburgh, East Midlands and Leeds/Bradford. In 2012 bmi regional achieved a punctuality rate of 93.2%.

Punctuality Award Short Haul Airline

Aegean Airlines operates two daily flights to Athens and in the summer season up to six flights a week to Corfu, Iraklion and Rhodes. In 2012, Aegean Airlines achieved a punctuality rate of 90.4%

Punctuality Award Long Haul Airline

Thai Airways International operates a three weekly service to Bangkok. In 2012, Thai Airways International achieved a punctuality rate of 85.5%.

Performance Award Cargo Airline

Saudi Airlines Cargo on average operates 13 flights a week to 7 destinations around the globe and has been the largest cargo carrier at Brussels Airport for several years now.

Environment and Safety

The environmental and safety awards are granted for outstanding achievement in 2012 regarding environmental consciousness and contribution to the continuous improvement of safety standards and awareness.

Environmental Award

Aviapartner wins the environmental award for conducting all its activities with minimal impact on the environment. The long-term goals they defined include the reduction of waste and carbon emissions, reuse and recycling, encouraging alternative means of transportation and creating awareness among providers and partners. 

Safety Award

The safety award goes to Joe Etongwe and Steven Van Geenhoven, who work as ramp agents with Aviapartner. Due to their positive attitude with regard to safety and their correct use of the appropriate reporting channels, they prevented the departure of an aircraft that was leaking fuel at that moment.

Network and route development
The nominees for the network development awards are airlines that have distinguished themselves by opening new routes or by the growth in passenger numbers or cargo volume carried. 

Network Development Award Short Haul Airline

Jetairfly, for launching 5 new routes in 2012, to Ponta Delgada, Ohrid, Skopje, Fez and Rabat.

Network Development Award Long Haul Airline

Brussels Airlines, for expanding its fleet by two additional A330 planes, allowing them to increase the frequency to Africa to 6 daily flights and for the introduction of a daily service to New York.

Network Development Award Cargo Airline

Demavia, for launching a new cargo service to Kinshasa, in collaboration with FLYCongo and Magma Aviation.

Brucargo Award

This is a new award for partners at Brucargo. The first award winner in this category is Adelantex for the close cooperation with Brussels Airport in attracting new cargo traffic and customers. Adelantex accounts for more than 10% of all import cargo at Brussels Airport.
