Denver International Airport Earns a Trio of Prestigious Industry Awards

Airports Going Green “Outstanding Sustainability Infrastructure Development”

DEN is this year’s top recipient from Airports Going Green, a national program that recognizes the contributions of a project, program or person in pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry. DEN was named the winner of the “Outstanding Sustainability Infrastructure Development” award for the Hotel and Transit Center project. That project included the construction of a 519-room Westin hotel and a transit center that features a train station for the RTD A Line commuter rail. The Hotel and Transit earned LEED Platinum status earlier this year for including significant sustainable features that reduce energy costs by nearly 49 percent compared to a typical facility.

100 Best Fleets “Government Green Fleet Award”

DEN has been named No. 3 among 50 winners of the “Government Green Fleet Award.” This prestigious industry award is open to all federal, state, and local government fleets in North America. Winning fleet operations are judged on a variety of criteria that includes fleet composition, fuels and emissions, policy and planning, fleet utilization and executive and employee involvement. DEN’s fleet uses 73 percent compressed natural gas fuel for lower emissions; has established a “lean fleet” program that draws upon employees for ideas to improve the fleet; has upgraded emissions testing programs and has upgraded its vehicle storage building to energy-efficient LED lighting. DEN previously ranked No. 29 on the list in 2016.

Engineering News-Record Mountain State “Regional Best Projects”

Engineering News-Record Mountain State named DEN’s gate apron rehabilitation and drainage improvements projects as the “Best Transportation Project of 2017” for projects located in Colorado, Wyoming and North and South Dakota. The project, valued at $35 million, consisted of apron replacement/repair, drainage improvements of gate pavement, pedestrian jet bridge work, and utility rehabilitation work at nine gates on two separate concourses as well as pavement placement for two additional gates in preparation for future gate expansion at the airport. Flatiron was the contractor for this project.

DEN also earned the Engineering News-Record Mountain State “Award of Merit” in the government/public building category for the construction of Fire Station 35. The station previously earned LEED Gold certification for its energy-efficient design and features.
