Wizz Air announce 9th route at DSA

LCC add's Kosice from September 2015

The Slovakian city Kosice has become the latest city to be added to the growing list of destinations from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Wizz Air has announced that the new route from the Yorkshire airport, with flights every Wednesday and Sunday, will start on September 16.

Kosice is the second largest city in Slovakia, located in the east of the country, with a population of 240,000. It was awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2013 and it is known for having the largest heritage reservation in Slovakia as well as being home to the oldest marathon in Europe.

The city’s Eastern Slovak Museum is home to the gold treasure of Kosice, one of the largest and most significant treasures in Europe consisting of 2920 pieces of gold.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is Wizz Air’s second largest UK base and the only one in Yorkshire. Currently, the airport operates a total of 24 Wizz Air flights per week to eight destinations including Bucharest in Romania, and Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw in Poland.

The airline continues to expand its operations from the region and the route to Kosice, which is one of Wizz’s 20 European bases, will become Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s ninth Wizz Air route.

Chris Harcombe, Head of Aviation Development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We’re delighted to announce the new Wizz Air route to Kosice. It is great news for the city region that the North of England’s only service to Kosice will be flying from Doncaster.

“It will connect Yorkshire to another major European city which offers a great location for travellers. The new route follows the additional growth of other Wizz Air routes over the past year, which shows the airlines great commitment to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

“With the new Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) on track to connect the M18 to the airport, we believe demand in European destinations will continue to increase.

“We look forward to developing our partnership with Wizz Air further to provide an even wider range of locations for people to visit.”

Daniel de Carvalho, spokesman for Wizz Air, added: "This new route to Kosice underlines Wizz Air’s commitment to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the Yorkshire region.

“Since starting at Doncaster Sheffield Airport in 2006 with just three weekly services to Katowice in Poland, Wizz Air now operates 24 flights per week to eight destinations.

“We hope that the new route will be an attractive option for people in Yorkshire to access a historic city and learn more about the region.”
