Busiest August In Dublin Airport’s 75 Year History
A record 2.6 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport last month, making it the busiest August in the airport’s history.
Traffic increased by 15% compared to August last year, as all segments of the market increased.
Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe increased by 12% to over 1.4 million. Almost 823,000 passengers travelled on UK routes, an increase of 18%.
Transatlantic passenger traffic grew by 23% to almost 319,000. Traffic to and from other international destinations, including the Middle East and Africa, increased by 29% to just under 86,000.
Passenger numbers on domestic routes increased by 7% to over 8,500.
So far this year, more than 16.8 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport – almost 2.3 million more than in the first eight months of the year, or an increase of 15%.
Meanwhile the latest official monthly passenger figures from ACI Europe, released today, show that Dublin Airport continued to be at the forefront of European passenger growth in July.
Dublin traffic increased by 16.9% during the month compared to July 2014 – over two and a half times the European growth average.
Passenger traffic at Europe’s airports grew by 6.7%, pointing to a strong peak summer season for air travel, ACI Europe said.
“EU airports saw average passenger traffic growth of 6.4%, with Slovenia, Ireland, Hungary, Romania and Luxembourg leading the region with double digit growth.”
Passenger traffic at airports elsewhere in Europe rebounded after several months of very weak growth, reporting a 7.6% increase, despite continued weakness in Russia.
Freight traffic across the European airport network reported “tepid” growth of 0.5%, ACI Europe said, while aircraft movements were up 2.6%, reflecting increased airline capacity.
Among Europe’s major airports, the highest July passenger growth was seen at Istanbul IST (+16.9%), Madrid (+13.1%), Amsterdam (+8.4%), Frankfurt (+6.6%) and London LGW (+6.4%).
Among airports in the 10-25 million passenger category, the highest growth was seen at Istanbul SAW (+28.5%), Ankara (+25.7%), Athens (+20.6%), Tel Aviv (+18.9%) and Dublin (+16.9%).
