Eindhoven Airport largest airport without a direct connection to an European hub
Eindhoven Airport has seen significant growth over the recent years. The second largest airport of the Netherlands plans to welcome 5.7 million passengers by the end of this year, which means nearly one million passengers more than the year before.
Despite these impressive growth statistics research shows that Eindhoven Airport is the biggest airport (in terms of passenger numbers) without any direct connection to an European hub. Looking at airports with comparable passenger numbers one can state that only Rome Ciampino (CIA) has more passengers on an annual basis, however this is the second airport of Rome. Ciampino Airport is only 30 kilometers away from the city’s main airport Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
Another comparable airport in terms of pax numbers is Liverpool (LPL), however the airport in Northern England is connected with hub Belfast via Flybe. Flybe has a codeshare agreement with British Airways and Aer Lingus, making it for Liverpudlians possible to fly out to the world using the network of both British Airways and Aer Lingus.
Whilst Eindhoven Airport is surpassing the 5 million passenger mark for the first time this year, one can conclude that it will be just a matter of time before Eindhoven will be connected to one of the major hubs in Europe. The airport surely has a strong potential corporate market with large tech companies such as Tesla, Philips, ASML and NXP being their neighbours to make any future hub connection an instant success.
