Ryanair opens base at Hamburg Airport

Two aircraft stationed at base and seven new destinations for winter timetable

Ryanair today opened a new base at Hamburg Airport. Two of the Irish airline’s aircraft are now permanently based in Hamburg. In addition, Ryanair is opening seven new routes from Hamburg for the 2016/17 winter timetable, with flights to Sofia, London Stansted, Milan Bergamo, Dublin, Manchester, Brussels Zaventem and Gran Canaria. Of these, Sofia, London Stansted and Milan Bergamo are completely new destinations for Hamburg Airport’s route network. Ryanair now links the city with 14 destinations all over Europe and will offer 16 destinations in summer 2017.

“We are delighted by Ryanair’s decision to grow in Hamburg. This is a clear decision to commit to the city and its metropolitan region. The variety in our route network continues to grow, so that both business and private travellers have more choice. I am certain that Ryanair’s new services will be well received. It is a positive signal for our community that Ryanair’s state-of-the-art fleet of aircraft have an average age of just 5 years,” says Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport.

Tim Howe Schröder, Ryanair’s Senior Marketing Manager, said: “We are pleased to finally open our base at Hamburg Airport, as we invest $200m with 2 based aircraft, with 7 new winter routes to Brussels, Dublin, Gran Canaria, London Stansted, Manchester, Milan Bergamo & Sofia. We will also add 2 new summer routes to Faro and Thessaloniki from April 2017 onwards, which will deliver over 1.7m customers p.a. and support 1,300 jobs at Hamburg Airport, and further underlines our commitment to growing German traffic, tourism and jobs.”

Ryanair’s modern fleet

Ryanair’s fleet currently consists of more than 350 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline has also ordered 315 modern Boeing 737 MAX 200 planes, which are significantly quieter than comparably sized aircraft. This is in line with Hamburg Airport’s efforts to have the airlines deploy state-of-the-art aircraft in Hamburg. As part of its current “Always Getting Better” campaign, Ryanair will continue to improve its service quality, modernise the cabin layout and introduce new technical improvements.

Looking ahead to the 2017 summer timetable

The Ryanair base in Hamburg will grow further with the summer timetable. The airline has already announced three weekly services each to Faro in Portugal and to Thessaloniki in Greece. For the start of the summer timetable, Ryanair will also be increasing the number of flights to the popular holiday island of Mallorca. The airline will then offer two daily flights from Hamburg to Palma de Mallorca instead of the five weekly flights currently offered.
