Marseille breaks traffic records!
For the sixth month in a row, Marseille Provence beats historic traffic records and continues its steady growth.
With 804,664 passengers in June, Marseille Provence increased its last year performance by 2.4%. Although the figure is not impressive, let's recall that last year Marseille hosted 5 football games for the Euro tournament, bringing thousands of fans on both scheduled and charter flights!
As June, every month since the beginning of 2017 beat its historic traffic records!
Hence, passengers traffic reached 4.2 million for the first half, exceeding last year's figures by a strong +5.2%, with a number of movements dropped by 2.5%.
This means airlines use bigger aircraft capacity and optimize their load factors (70% on average from MRS main terminal, 88% from MRS low-cost terminal).
This growth is mainly driven by international traffic (+7.3%), while domestic traffic remains positive (+2.4%). European routes show the strongest performance (+8.2%), successfully backed by the new routes launched this year: VIE, ALC, SPU, SXF, GVA, VCE, LTN, VLC, FAO, FLR and CAG.
Northern Africa is right behind with +5.9% since January, thanks to Tunisia rebirth after some tough years (+17.8%).
Last but not least, Long Haul traffic reaches +19.1% in June, mainly driven by Air Canada new service to YUL, and by Air Transat frequency increase. This is a good sign for coming winter with Intercontinental enhancement taking place in Marseille:
- Air Austral flying to RUN (2 weekly frequencies)
- Air Transat extending their operations up to November
- Direct flights to PTP and FDF with XL Airways
- Frequency increase to DKR with Aigle Azur (from 2 to 3 weekly frequencies)
This overall performance is the result of a strong relation between airlines, local partners and Marseille Provence, to support actual and new routes and make them a success for everyone.
