Sofia Airport and WiZZ – 10 Years Together
On 19th May 2016, Sofia Airport celebrated 10 years since opening of Wizz Air’s base at the major Bulgarian airport.
It coincided with the 12th birthday of the leading Eastern European low cost airline.
The event was marked by the first landing at Sofia Airport of Airbus 321 - the newcomer in WiZZ fleet.
An aircraft of the same type with 230 seats on board will start operating from Sofia in December 2016 bringing the number of based planes to 7. The good news was brought personally by the Wizz Air’s CEO Mr. Jozsef Varadi who visited the Bulgarian capital together with other Airline’s managers.
Once again, Sofia Airport was recognized as important part of the Wizz Air’s expanding network and as a reliable partner through challenging times.
For 10 years, Wizz Air has carried to and from Sofia the impressive number of over 5.5 mil passengers contributing to the average annual airport traffic development for this period of 7.4%. Currently, the Airline operates on 26 direct routes with 3 more to follow later in the summer this year to connect the Bulgarian capital with Copenhagen, Budapest and Kutaisi in Georgia. London/Luton is the preferred WiZZ destination from Sofia which is currently connected by 81 flights a week. The 7th aircraft at the end of 2016 will give start to another 3 new air services – to Basel, Hannover and to Doncaster Sheffield “Robin Hood” Airport and will add capacity to a number of the existing destinations.
Since the beginning of 2016, Sofia Airport has already announced 8 new routes to so far unserved destinations. Besides the above mentioned, there are another 9 airports which will be linked by direct flights in September when Ryanair will also set a base at Sofia Airport.
By the end of the year the total number of the air routes served from Sofia Airport will reach 73 – a spectacular growth compared to its network of 49 routes in 2015.
