BER Infrastructure: Berlin Airports welcomes the opening of the new motorway to Poznań

Journey time from Berlin to Posen now much shorter / Important step prior to the start of the UEFA Football Championship in June 2012 / New motorway extends the BER catchment area into Poland

The new motorway junction Trzciel, which is the final section of the motorway link between Berlin and Poznań via Frankfurt an der Oder, was opened today in a ceremony attended by the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski, Brandenburg‘s Prime Minister, Matthias Platzeck, political and business leaders, and representatives of Berlin Airports.

This new, 100-kilometre section will connect central Poland with the European motorway network and shortens the journey time from Berlin to Poznań to around three hours. With a population of approximately 600,000, Poznań is the third-largest city in Poland and is a busy centre of industry, trade and research. As well as being one of country’s cultural centres, the city is also one of the cities hosting the 2012 UEFA Football Championships in June 2012.

The Chief Operating Officer of Berlin Airports, Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, welcomed the new motorway: “For us the completion of this final section of the motorway is a very important step. Western Poland is a key catchment area for Berlin’s airports. Every year, more than one million passengers from Poland use the airports Schoenefeld and Tegel. We expect the number of passengers from Poland to increase steadily after the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt.”

Berlin Airports and the UEFA Championships

The final round of the 14th UEFA Football Championships takes place between 8 June and 1 July 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. Berlin Airports is the official Airport Partner of one of the cities hosting the championship: Wroclaw (journey time by car from Berlin: around 4 hours), where three group stage games will take place. Only one week after opening, the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will face its first major challenge when more than ten thousand football fans from all across Europe land here and continue their onward journey to the stadiums in Wroclaw and Poznań.

Poland is Partner Country of the ILA 2012

The Republic of Poland is also the official partner country of the international aerospace exhibition ILA 2012, which takes place from 11 to 16 September 2012 at the new exhibition centre Berlin ExpoCenter Airport, immediately adjacent to the new BER airport. Under the lead-management of the Polish Ministry of Economics and the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIIZ), Germany’s neighbour is set to unveil its strongest showing ever at the Berlin Air Show. Since the ILA moved to Berlin in 1992, Poland has always exhibited at the bi-annual air show. In the last few years, industry experts from Poland have accounted for the largest group of foreign visitors to the show; the show site is only 80km from the Polish border.
