Number of passengers significantly increased in the first eight months of 2019
More than three million passengers at Berlin’s airports in August
The number of guests to Berlin’s airports significantly increased in the first eight months of this year. From January until August 2019, 23,994,501 passengers passed through Tegel and Schönefeld, 8 per cent more than the same period the previous year, as shown by the traffic report's provisional figures. The increase in Tegel is particularly large, where 16,184,801 passengers took off and landed in August, 18.5 per cent more than in the first eight months of 2018. In Schönefeld, 7,809,700 passed through, 8.9 per cent fewer than in the same period of the previous year.
In August, the number of guests fell slightly. By the end of the summer holidays, a total of 3,180,931 passengers had passed through Tegel and Schönefeld. That was around 178,000 fewer than the previous month, the holiday month of July. Compared to August 2018, the number of passengers decreased by three per cent. However, summer holidays the previous year ended in the middle of August, until which time it had been peak travel season for Berlin’s airports.
On the other hand, Tegel Airport had to handle a larger rush in the previous month than Schönefeld Airport. In Tegel, 2,136,855 passengers took off and landed, 2.1 per cent more than in August 2018. Conversely, the number of passengers compared to the same month the previous year went down by 12 per cent, where 1,044,076 passengers passed through. The decline in Schönefeld is due to airlines having moved routes from Schönefeld to Tegel.
In total, 24,989 planes took off and landed in August 2019 in both of Berlin’s airports. That is 7.3 per cent fewer than in the same period the previous year. The decline is mainly due to airlines better utilising their planes. In Tegel, there were 16,643 take-offs and landings (3.7 per cent less). In Schönefeld, there were 8,346 take-offs and landings (13.7 per cent less).
