Airport Company Supports the Special Olympics World Games
Delegations from all over the world travel to & from BER
Welcome to BER: The Special Olympics World Games, the largest inclusive sporting event in the world, is being hosted in Berlin from 17 to 25 June 2023. The airport company supports this major sporting event as part of its cooperation to help athletes travel to and from BER with as little stress as possible.
Tomorrow, 8 June 2023, the Special Olympics torch known as the Flame of Hope will arrive at BER Airport. The torch will be lit in Athens and arrive at the airport on Aegean Airlines in the afternoon of the following day. A welcome from the organisers, the "Flame Arrival Ceremony", will be held on the visitor's terrace.
In the coming days, a large number of delegations will arrive via Berlin Brandenburg Airport and leave again after the Games. The first athletes have already arrived at BER. Most of the guests, around 40 delegations with around 1,500 members, will be expected at BER next Monday, 12 June, 2023.
The airport company and its partners have prepared intensively for this important event taking place in the capital region. It is particularly important to help athletes find their way around the airport and support them in the handling and transporting large items of luggage. A Meet & Greet Area will be set up in the arrivals area of Terminal 1 to welcome and accredit guests. To assist them on their onward journeys, either by bus or car, certain parking or waiting areas will be set up at the airport. On peak days, as the delegations arrive and depart, the BERteam will be on duty with many volunteers to accompany the athletes and be available for questions.
Aletta von Massenbach, CEO Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: "We warmly welcome guests from all over the world to our airport. BER is the gateway to the capital region and will significantly shape the athletes' first impression of their host city. That is why we and our partners have been preparing for months for the major logistical and organisational challenges associated with the arrival and departure of delegations from all over the world. We look forward to the games and keep our fingers crossed for all participants!"
