Aeromexico Already Up-Gauging TPA-MEX
After operating the new Tampa route for only three weeks with 99-seat regional E190 aircraft, Aeromexico confirmed it will be switching to a mainline 737 MAX 8.
Tampa International Airport’s newest airline is already looking to increase its passenger capacity.
Aeromexico, which launched nonstop service to Mexico City from TPA on July 1, confirmed on 18 July it is moving to a bigger aircraft after the successful launch of its daily flights.
Beginning 27 October, the airline will fly the daily route with Boeing 737 aircraft, mostly aboard the 737 MAX 8 with Aeromexico’s most up-to-date features, including Wi-Fi, USB ports, LED lighting and high-definition seatback video screens.
The Aeromexico 737 MAX 8 seats 166 passengers, with 150 in Economy and 16 in the airline’s premium cabin, Clase Premier. The route started with an Embraer E190 with 99 seats, including 11 in Clase Premier.
Aeromexico had previously planned to move to the larger aircraft temporarily for the winter holidays, but decided to make the change about two months earlier than expected and to make it permanent as long as passenger traffic supports it. Daily flights aboard the smaller regional jets have demonstrated strong demand.
Tampa Bay was previously Aeromexico’s largest unserved market in the United States, and is now its 23rd destination in the country and third in Florida, joining Orlando and Miami. Officials from the Airport and across the region called the launch of daily nonstop service to Mexico City as a victory for the entire Tampa Bay community.
