September 2019 Traffic Results: 10.4% Increase in Passenger Volume at Vienna Airport
Flughafen Wien AG continued to show strong growth. In September 2019, the total number of passengers handled by the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) rose by 10.0% to 3.8 million travellers. The accumulated passenger volume in the period January to September 2019 was up 16.6% to 30.1 million. Vienna Airport registered a significant increase in passenger volume of 19.5% to 24.0 million in the first nine months of the year.
Vienna Airport: Significant growth in passenger volume and flight movements
The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the month of September 2019 rose by 10.4% compared to the prior-year month to 2,977,411 travellers. The number of local passengers increased strongly by 12.0%, and transfer passenger volume was up by 6.0%. The number of flight movements in September 2019 also showed a substantial increase of 8.0% year-on-year. Cargo volume at Vienna Airport dropped by 3.0% from the comparable level of September 2018.
The total number of passengers at Vienna Airport flying to destinations in Western Europe climbed by 8.3% in September 2019, whereas passenger traffic to Eastern Europe expanded by 18.9%. In September 2019, the number of passengers travelling to the Far East was up by 8.7% from the prior-year month, and passenger volume to Middle Eastern destinations rose by 11.9%. The number of passengers travelling to North America showed a clearly positive development, rising by 28.7% in September 2019, and passenger volume to destinations in Africa also increased substantially by 12.1% in a year-on-year comparison.
Malta Airport reported an increase in passenger volume of 7.8% in the month of September 2019, whereas Kosice Airport registered a rise of 17.1% in the number of passengers it handled.
