$425 MILLION IN ECONOMIC IMPACTS AND NEARLY 4,500 JOBS ACROSS CANADA
April 16, 2013 – During a conference given at the Québec Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the President and CEO of Aéroport de Québec inc. (AQi), Mr. Gaëtan Gagné, revealed the broad outlines of a study conducted by the Conference Board of Canada which demonstrates that the Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) generates a $425 million economic impact and contributes to the maintenance of nearly 4,500 jobs across Canada.
This study establishes the fact that YQB generates $163 million in GDP in the Québec City region alone, $153 million in the rest of the province and $109 million in the rest of Canada for a total of $425 million.
The Conference Board also mentions that YQB helps to maintain 1,509 jobs in the Québec City region, 1,927 elsewhere in Québec and 1,015 jobs in the rest of Canada for a total of 4,451 direct, indirect and induced jobs across the country. YQB’s presence produces $98 million in working income in the Québec City region and $95 million in the rest of the province.
The Conference Board’s study also reveals that the federal government, the Québec government and other provincial governments collect a total of approximately $30 million in taxes and royalties of all kinds in direct relation to YQB’s presence.
The Conference Board also shows that of the 188,849 visitors who passed through YQB’s gates in 2010, 110,973 were Canadian, 10,263 were American and 67,613 came from elsewhere in the world. During that year, these visitors spent nearly $100 million in the region, an average of $500 per person.
This study also established that the economic impact of Jean Lesage International Airport is estimated to be $850 million across Canada and that it will contribute to approximately 9,000 jobs all over the country once it has doubled its capacity in 2016.
«We were aware that YQB has an impact on the economy but we didn’t think that it would be this impressive. It makes us want to carry on with our development projects, even more so since 94% of the population supports our projects as shown by a survey done by SOM last January”, said Mr. Gagné.
Since November 1, 2000, the Québec City Airport has been responsible for the management, operation, maintenance and development of the Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport. Approximately a dozen carriers offer multiple connections to various destinations in North America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe, over 50 direct flights a day to major cities in Eastern Canada and the United States, such as Montréal, Toronto, Newark, Chicago, Philadelphia and soon JFK, and, in winter, over 40 chartered flights a week to sun destinations.
