24 % Growth in Charter Traffic at Aalborg Airport

July 2016 became a great month at Aalborg Airport, where 24,4 percent more charter passengers travelled to popular summer destinations, compared to July 2015. Including international and domestic traffic results, July 2016 became the largest July month so far in the history of Aalborg Airport – with an overall growth of 6,5 percent.

Strong growth in domestic traffic and in the number of charter passengers, but a decline in international traffic, result in a total increase of 6.5 percent in July 2016, compared to July 2015. Overall, 144,815 passengers travelled to and from Aalborg Airport in July 2016 against 135,943 in 2015. Consequently, a new record has been made, and not only is July 2016 the largest month of its kind ever recorded, but it is also the 3rd largest month ever in the history of Aalborg Airport.

Charter traffic has increased by 24.4 percent more passengers compared to the same month last year, where 48,507 flew to and from Aalborg Airport in July 2016 compared to 38,984 in July 2015.

- It is gratifying that we are experiencing a July-record with so many charter passengers. The 630 new parking spaces have also proved very useful this month, where we, on the busiest days, had an almost full parking lot with over 5000 cars. That we can see such an increase in charter traffic is a result of great capacity, new popular summer destinations and a continued strong wanderlust, says CEO of Aalborg Airport, Søren Svendsen.

Continued Growth

Domestic traffic at Aalborg Airport has had an increase in passengers 10 months in a row – with an 10,1 percent increase in July.

- July is a typical summer holiday month for businesses, and it is therefore great to see a growth of 10.1 percent in travellers to and from Copenhagen. A sample survey, conducted by Aalborg Airport, shows that many domestic travellers from Aalborg are flying international from Copenhagen. This could be an indication that Copenhagen is used as a hub destination instead of Frankfurt, - to where Lufthansa recently reduced the number of weekly departures from Aalborg, says Søren Svendsen.

However, the reduced Frankfurt route still has its impact on the passenger results for international traffic, where July showed a 12,6 percent decline in international passengers to and from Aalborg. On the other hand, Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul route shows a 60 percent growth in July 2016, compared to last year. Moreover, KLM experiences an increase in passengers on the route to Amsterdam.
