More than 600,000 Passengers Travelled Through Queen Alia International Airport during July

Airport International Group (AIG), the Jordanian consortium responsible for the rehabilitation, expansion, and operation of the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), recently announced its July traffic results, with the year’s busiest month hitting new records in passenger and aircraft movements (ACMs).

Total Passenger traffic reached 654,466 passengers, representing a 4.2% increase over July 2011. ACMs numbered 6,459 in total — a 6.3% increase compared to July 2011. In terms of year-to-date passenger traffic, more than three and a half million passengers have travelled through QAIA, reaching 3,677,965 from January 2012 to the end of July, which translates to a remarkable 18.4% increase over the same seven-month period in 2011. The year-to-date ACMs at the conclusion of July were recorded at 39,271, a 7.7% increase over the same period in 2011.

“As the launch date of QAIA’s new terminal draws near, these statistics showcase the bright future that is in store for this national landmark,” commented Kjeld Binger, CEO of AIG. “July 2011 was a record breaking month for QAIA. The fact that we were able to even surpass the 2011 level is very satisfactory and demonstrating strong market resilience.

AIG is investing an estimated US $750 million to construct a landmark new terminal — now 89% complete — which will serve as a source of pride and prosperity for all Jordanians. This new terminal will significantly increase the airport capacity to 9 million passengers annually, nearly tripling the current airport capacity of 3.5 million passengers annually. Future expansions will allow the airport to reach a capacity of 12 million passengers a year. AIG has also spent US $100 million on rehabilitating and improving the existing terminals to enable the airport to handle the continuous growth in passenger traffic.
