Tourist Numbers Soar As the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Begins
Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe is a staple in the social calendar, with only the Olympics and the World Cup exceeding the number of tickets sold.
This year, the festival will run from August 3rd to 27th, with 3000+ performances to choose from.
The Fringe first began in 1947, when the Edinburgh International Festival rejected a handful of theatre groups from performing at the festival. These performers staged their shows on the fringe of the event instead, giving the Fringe its iconic name. Today, 2.7m people flock to see the Edinburgh Festival Fringe – more than five times the number of residents in the city.
Although the Fringe is well-known for featuring up-and-coming artists, there are typically a few recognizable celebrities as well. Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Emma Thompson, and Mike Myers have all performed at the festival in the past. This year, visitors have the chance to see the likes of Katherine Parkinson (Humans), Robert Bathurst (Downton Abbey) and comedian Ruby Wax.
