Košice, 2nd October 2014

Press release

After one year, two weeks and one day Košice Airport and Wizz Air are celebrating 100 000 passengers on the London - Košice – London route. Started on 17th September 2013 with two weekly flights, the connection has been enjoying a strong demand on both ends, in Košice as well as in London.

The lucky 100 000th passenger Mrs. Gabriela Dunakova arrived to Košice on Thursday 2nd June 2014 with flight W6 7674 from London Luton. Mrs. Dunáková together with her husband visited their daughter. It was her first trip to London and thanks to that she became a happy owner of Wizz Air return ticket and welcome presents from Košice Airport, city of Košice and Košice Tourism, presented by Karl Dandler, Richard Raši and Renáta Lenártová.

Karl Dandler, Košice Airport CEO: “From the original two weekly frequencies the huge demand on both ends of the route inspired Wizz Air to boost the capacity to ten weekly flights, which were on sale during this summer. For the upcoming winter 2014/15 a daily operation is scheduled. We are glad that Wizz Air´s offer reflects the strong demand and we believe that our successful cooperation will continue in the long-term perspective.”

Richard Raši, the Mayor of Košice: “A year ago we were thinking whether this route from Košice to London will meet the expectations and whether the demand will be sufficient. I am glad that expectations of everyone involved were not only met, but even exceeded. Amazing number of 100 000 passengers after 55 weeks of operations confirms it very clearly.”

Renáta Lenártová, the vice-mayor and the chairman of the board, Košice Tourism: “In terms of incoming tourism, the importance of the Košice – London route is unquestionable. I am very glad that first 8 000 UK tourists already visited our city and that this number will grow in the future. For example also thanks to the great events which are organized in Košice – one of the highlights of the year is the upcoming weekend which combines the fascinating White Night and incomparable atmosphere of the oldest European marathon.”
