Several Chinese airlines to operate from Langkawi airport soon
SHAH ALAM: SEVERAL new airlines from China will operate from the Langkawi International Airport (LIA) soon, says Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali.
Without disclosing details, Bad-lisham said MAHB had concluded talks with the Chinese parties on the routes.
Asked on when the carriers will start operations from LIA, he replied: “When they come, we will announce it. We would like to do (announce) it together.”
Badlisham said this after presenting prizes to winners of the “Eraman Shopping Extravaganza 2016 — Shop & Win” contest, here, yesterday.
Currently, there are six airlines providing direct flights from LIA — AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo, Firefly, Silk Air and Tiger Air. On MAHB’s prospects, Badli-sham said the airport operator remained optimistic on the industry outlook despite a challenging business environment.
Commenting on the United States interest rate hike, he said for the short term there would be no big impact on MAHB, but it was something that the company needed to continue to monitor.
“This is not only for us but for our partners and airlines, too. I think we will have to look at further measures that Bank Negara Malaysia may want to introduce,” he said. “We do a lot of imports (in US dollars) and not exports, so it does not impact us that much. But it may also be the other way round. It makes investments into Malaysia a lot cheaper and attractive because there are foreign currencies that go a long way in ringgit terms,” added Badlisham.
The “Shop & Win Contest”, the second phase of the Eraman Shopping Extravaganza campaign, saw more than RM200,000 worth of prizes given away to 17 lucky winners. “The overwhelming number of entries for the Shop & Win Contest shows our loyal patrons’ enthusiasm and excitement in shopping with us,” said Badlisham.
The year-long Eraman Shopping Extravaganza campaign comprises three phases — “Shop & Style Contest”, “Shop & Win Contest” and “Shop & Drive Contest”. The third and final phase of the campaign, “Shop & Drive Contest”, will kick off next year — from January to February — and will see vouchers of up to RM4,000 given away weekly to 16 lucky winners. At the end of the campaign, one lucky winner will receive the keys to a brand new Mazda 6.
