Suhar welcomes Qeshm Air First Direct Flight coming from Shiraz Airport
Suhar Airport welcomed on Wednesday 15th of January 2020 Qeshm Air’s inaugural flight between Suhar and Shiraz, which is set to be operating three times a week.
Qeshm Air is the third international airlines Company, after Qatar Airways and Air Arabia, to operate direct flights to Suhar Airport, alongside SalamAir, the national domestic carrier that operates frequent domestic flights through Suhar Airport.
The Iranian airline seeks to increase the flight frequencies between Suhar and Shiraz with a view to promote tourism and economy opportunities between the two destinations, owing to the touristic and trade characteristics that Al-Batinah North Governorate entail with its port constituting a business gateway to the world.
Suhar is amongst the airports to which the government attach great importance, with plans and projects underway to help boost aircraft movements to reach two million passengers in the coming years.
“The inauguration of Qeshm Air flight is an added value to air traffic at Suhar Airport. It will enable us to channel heavier travel movements through the airport and promote it as another arrival destination for international passengers traveling to Oman. The executive management will seek to attain this goal as part of its expansion plans for the new year,” Ali Thani AlKhayfi, Suhar Airport Director, said. He also confirmed that “the airport is witnessing a rapid growth in travel movement and is contributing, based on the developed plans, to raise the number of passengers to attain two million passengers in the forthcoming years.”
By the end of November 2019, the number of domestic passengers reached 290,946 passengers on 2236 flights, in addition to 274,047 international passengers on 2106 flights.
Following the approval of the General Civil Aviation Authority issued to the Iranian airline on November 19, 2019, Qeshm Air will be operating its flights to Suhar Airport with an average of seven flights a week: two departing from Isfahan, three from Shiraz, one from Mashhad and one from Ahvaz.
As Oman Aviation Group puts a high value on improving traveller experience and convenience, work is currently underway to expand the current terminal to around 3000 square meters, with a view to transforming the building into two terminals: one for arrival and one for departure. The project aims also to make the airport operational around the clock with the ability to accommodate additional flights transferred from Muscat International Airport in cases of emergency.
