Wizz Air to invest further at Malmö Airport with a new direct route to Albania in time for the summer season
The Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air sees new opportunities in the Swedish market and is expanding its range of destinations from the Greater Copenhagen region and Malmö Airport with a new route to the Balkan Peninsula and the Albanian capital of Tirana.
In mid-May, it will be possible for the first time to fly non-stop between Malmö and Tirana. Wizz Air is expanding its base at Albania’s international airport with the addition of one aircraft, which will enable it to launch the new route.
Wizz Air is the sole carrier to serve the Malmö Airport (MMX) – Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) route, which will be the only direct air link between the Greater Copenhagen region and Albania.
Southern Sweden, and Skåne in particular, have a large percentage of residents with roots in the Balkan Peninsula, and a significant share of passengers are expected to be travellers who want to visit family and friends when the world opens up again. Albania is also a growing tourist destination.
Beginning May 14, Wizz Air will initially offer two weekly departures, but starting May 31, service will expand to three weekly departures using an A320 aircraft type.
Tickets are on sale. Wizz Air currently serves a number of other countries in the region with direct routes from Malmö Airport. For further information about current service at Malmö Airport: www.swedavia.se/malmo.
