20 Years Subway Link to NUE Airport

It was a first in Germany: on 27th November 1999 the subway station Nuremberg Airport was opened, which made NUE the first airport in Germany to be connected to the city subway system with its own stop. Who would have thought? 20 years later, the subway has transported around 30 million passengers to and from the airport.

Daily, around 6,400 passengers travel to the airport by subway, but also the airport’s staff and airline crews are happy to make use of the connection. This, in turn, relieves the streets around the airport, especially during vacations. Passengers using the station, whether they are arriving or departing, are first greeted with some of the works of one of Nuremberg’s most famous artists, Albrecht Dürer, namesake of the airport.

The route from the airport to the main train station downtown takes roughly twelve minutes, making NUE the third fastest airport to reach in Germany from each main station. In fact, NUE is the only airport in Germany which is connected to the actual subway system, with others being connected by bus, regional or suburban train. That means, not only has NUE been the first airport to be connected to the subway system, so far, it is the only.
