Aegean Airlines taking up NUE-ATH route in Summer 2020
After Ryanair’s announcement to close their base at NUE, a first success in replacing routes that are becoming unserved could be achieved. Starting May 13th, Aegean Airlines will fly nonstop from Nuremberg Airport to Athens, taking over the route flown by Ryanair until 26 March. Aegean will fly twice per week on Wednesdays and Saturday, allowing passengers to connect via Athens to the many domestic destinations, for example the Greek islands.
Aegean Airlines already connect Nuremberg and Thessaloniki since 2017. Their experience with NUE's market potential proved to be a good base for route development. The route shows significant demand in the leisure/city breaker and VFR-travel segments and could be relevant for trade show visitors as well. Aegean Airline’s reaction is an example of a quick market response, where they made use of their newly opened blue ocean opportunity due to Ryanair’s base exit.
