Oakland International Airport surpassed 80% of pre-pandemic passenger levels in April 2022

Oakland, Calif. – May 26, 2022: Oakland International Airport (OAK) has reached a milestone for the return of passenger traffic during the pandemic. In April 2022, for the first time in more than two years, monthly passenger traffic at OAK exceeded 80% of what was experienced prior to the COVID-19 crisis. OAK continues to lead Bay Area airports in the percent return of passengers.

“Reaching 80% of pre-pandemic passenger traffic is a milestone that we have been looking forward to here at OAK,” says Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We are pleased to announce 5 new flights across the USA, including Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, for summer and we encourage everyone to Fly the East Bay Way as they make their travel plans for the season and beyond.”

April 2022 Passenger and Cargo Statistics

  • Oakland International Airport saw 918,532 total passengers in April 2022. This represents 80.8 percent of the pre-pandemic passenger levels seen in April 2019, and a month-to-month increase of 10.6 percent compared to March 2022.
  • The airport saw April passenger traffic jump by 53.8 percent compared to April 2021 when just 597,282 passengers were carried. Over twenty times as many passengers flew through OAK in April 2022 compared to April 2020, which had the lowest passenger levels throughout the year.
  • A total of 456,713 passengers departed OAK’s runways in April, with 60,540 of those connecting.
  • There were 13,259 international passengers that arrived at OAK in April.
  • On a twelve-month rolling basis, traffic is up by 63.6 percent with 8,463,570 passengers this year compared to 5,173,492 during the same period a year ago.
  • 102.8 million pounds (about 46,629,257.6 kg) of air cargo were transported in April, down by 7.9 percent in a year-over-year comparison.
