Memorial Day weekend starts peak summer travel and OAK is ready

Airport expects 90% of pre-pandemic passengers and is offering new routes, discounted parking, and new concessions this summer.

Oakland, Calif. – May 25, 2022:  Oakland International Airport (OAK) is prepared for a busy Memorial Day weekend as the busy summer travel season kicks off. OAK estimates that nearly 137,000 passengers will arrive at and depart from the airport between Friday, May 27th, and Monday, May 30th. Friday and Monday will likely be the busiest days during this holiday travel period based on historical trends.

In response to increased travel demand in the Bay Area for the summer, Spirit Airlines launched their new daily nonstop flights to Philadelphia last week. Spirit’s new service to San Diego is expected to begin today, May 25th, and their service to Newark/NYC is expected to begin in August. New routes this summer also include daily Kailua-Kona flights on Hawaiian Airlines, which will begin in June.

“We wish safe travels to everyone this summer,” says Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “For those who are traveling this holiday weekend, we encourage you to arrive early and allow plenty of time at the airport as our terminals will be busier than usual. We thank everyone choosing to Fly the East Bay Way.”

Many shops and restaurants are open and ready at OAK. Click here to view what offerings are open now at the airport. Newly opened restaurants at OAK include Oaklandish Coffee Collective in Terminal 1, and the new Peet’s Coffee, Subway, and Farley’s Café in Terminal 2.

For international travelers, COVID testing is still available for free on-site at the airport for passengers. Appointments may be made with CityHealth here.
