OAK expects in excess of 670,000 passengers over the holidays

Oakland, California – December 16, 2022: Airport officials anticipate that over 670,000 passengers will use the airport between Friday, December 16th and Monday, January 2nd based on scheduled airline seats and past observed traffic during the holiday travel period. OAK notes that the airport could see higher traffic levels well into January due to travelers extending the duration of their holiday trips, as well as later start dates for local schools, colleges, and universities.

Based on scheduled seats, traffic this year is expected to increase by over 10 percent compared to the same period in 2021. This estimate represents approximately 90 percent of pre-pandemic passenger levels seen in 2019. Additionally, Oakland International Airport was recently rated in the top five US airports for holiday travel by Forbes, based on observed on-time airline performance.

“Oakland International Airport looks forward to welcoming more passengers through the holiday travel period this year and thanks everyone who chooses to Fly the East Bay Way during this festive season,” says Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We hope that our customers enjoy the new improvements to our facility, including six newly opened restaurants and our new online parking reservation system.”

We encourage passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to the scheduled departure time for their flight. If passengers arrive extra early, we highly recommend checking out the new restaurants that have opened recently at Oakland International Airport. These new additions include Oaklandish Coffee Collective and a newly renovated Peet’s Coffee in Terminal One, and in Terminal Two, Tay Ho Oakland, Oakland Draft House Featuring Sierra Nevada, another newly renovated Peet’s Coffee, Farley’s Café, and Subway (which opened in 2021).

On-airport parking is available for passengers in OAK’s Premier, Hourly, Daily and Economy lots. Passengers are also encouraged to utilize the new online parking reservation system at oaklandairport.com/parking. Passengers can reserve their parking ahead of time in any of OAK’s passenger parking lots, and they can do so up to two hours prior to their arrival at the lot. Passengers can rest easier knowing that no matter how busy the airport is throughout the holidays, their parking is guaranteed with a reservation. Plus, parking at OAK is close and convenient - right across the street from the terminals.

Additionally, we encourage travelers to utilize public rail services to travel to and from OAK via the easy-to-use airport BART station that is also right across the street from both terminals.
