Independence Day and new destinations lead to peak summer traffic at OAK
New nonstops include Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation
Oakland, Calif. – June 28, 2023: Oakland International Airport officials expect peak level traffic at OAK during the Independence Day holiday travel period. Key dates for travel for the 4th of July holiday are projected to be between Friday, June 30th through Sunday, July 9th. Based on scheduled seat data and past performance, airport officials project that over 280,000 passengers will Fly the East Bay Way during the holiday travel period.
It’s a particular pleasure for OAK to celebrate this Independence Day with a new nonstop flight on Spirit Airlines to Philadelphia. Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States and where the Declaration of Independence was signed on the 4th of July in 1776. We encourage San Francisco Bay Area passengers to use this new flight and explore the roots of our great country.
“We wish everyone a very happy Independence Day and look forward to welcoming all who will pass through our doors throughout the holiday travel period,” says Craig Simon, Acting Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “Summer here at OAK had a strong start with Memorial Day, and we anticipate that traffic will remain strong through the 4th of July week and the rest of the summer.”
Currently, parking space is available in all of OAK’s passenger parking lots. Travelers can add certainty to their travel plans by reserving their parking ahead at iflyoak.com/parking. If any of the parking lots sell out, an update will be displayed on the parking webpage and parkers will be accommodated at another airport lot. Park OAK offers the only official, on-airport parking at OAK.
BART provides a quick and reliable option to and from OAK with trains arriving and departing every 6 minutes throughout the day. BART schedules can be found at BART.gov.
As always during peak periods, passengers are encouraged to arrive early for their flights. The general recommendation is to arrive two hours prior to departure, but passengers should follow guidelines provided by their airline and enable flight update notifications using airline apps. TSA wait time information is available via the MyTSA mobile app and packing tips for smooth screening may be found on the TSA website. Current information on airport restaurant and store operating hours are available here.
In addition to Philadelphia, other new routes at OAK, this summer include:
- Spirit Airlines to Dallas-Fort Worth and NYC-Newark.
- Volaris to San Salvador, El Salvador.
- Southwest Airlines to New Orleans beginning July 15th and Baltimore/Washington DC beginning on September 5th.
Seasonal service resuming this summer at OAK includes:
