Southwest Airlines’ Baltimore-Washington (BWI) Nonstop Returns at OAK
Daily flights between OAK and BWI begin September 5th
Oakland, Calif. – February 10, 2023: Southwest Airlines will once again fly nonstop between OAK and Baltimore, Maryland (BWI) beginning September 5th. Flights will operate daily on Southwest’s fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft that seats 175 passengers. The last time that OAK had daily nonstop service to Baltimore was December of 2020.
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is the busiest airport in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. It is located 9 miles south of Baltimore and 32 miles northeast of Washington, DC. The Baltimore-Washington metro area is frequently among the top 10 busiest travel routes for the Bay Area where in 2019 nearly 4,600 passengers traveled every day between the two regions.
Additionally, Southwest has announced that they will increase the frequency of flights between OAK and Nashville, Tennessee (BNA) to five times weekly, operating daily except Tuesday and Wednesday, in September. Nashville is a popular and often requested destination by OAK passengers. Baltimore, Nashville, and Oakland all offer excellent connectivity to other destinations across Southwest’s extensive network as well.
“Oakland International Airport is proud to announce the addition of these key transcontinental flights. Both destinations are in high demand here in the Bay Area across both leisure and business markets. We encourage the traveling public to Fly the East Bay Way when visiting these exciting destinations” says Bryant L. Francis, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland.

These new flights will be powered via Southwest Airlines’ sustainable aviation fuel program that was introduced at the airport last year. This introduction made OAK the third airport in the country to have SAF incorporated into daily U.S. airline operations. This initiative is a part of Southwest’s goal to replace 10% of total jet fuel consumption with SAF by 2030, with a long-term goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The new fuel being used at Southwest Airlines’ OAK operation is made from renewable and sustainably sourced raw materials including used cooking oil and animal waste fat.
Southwest Airlines has its largest California operation at OAK and is OAK’s busiest passenger carrier. The new schedule provides Bay Area travelers with over 246 peak day flights between 34 destinations across the USA, including Hawaii, and to Mexico.
