PERTH AIRPORT SEEKS TENDERS FOR NEW TERMINAL BUILD
Following an Expression of Interest selection process, five companies have been given the opportunity to tender for the contract to construct Perth Airport’s first new terminal in over 20 years.
The new terminal will primarily service flights for the resource sector’s fly-in fly-out market, as well
as some interstate routes, and it is expected that over a million passengers will travel through the
terminal during its first year of operation in 2013.
Demand for airport services is continuing to increase and last year Perth Airport experienced a
record 10.4 million passenger movements which will continue to rise as more airlines establish
operations in Perth to support demand from the mining and tourism sectors.
The site of the new, single-storey terminal is adjacent to the current International Terminal and the
building’s footprint will be much larger than the current Domestic Terminal.
Perth Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Brad Geatches explains further; “All airlines from the
current Domestic Terminals, other than Virgin Blue, Qantas and Jetstar, will relocate to the new
terminal when it opens in 2013.
“Not only will these airlines and their passengers benefit greatly from the new terminal, but the
move will also substantially reduce activity in the current domestic precinct, thereby improving our
customers’ experiences in the existing terminals.”
The new terminal will feature:
- Access via a ‘walk-in’ landscaped plaza
- A check-in hall with 16 check-in counters and space for new check-in technology,
- including self service and bag drop
- A large central passenger security screening zone accessing a spacious departures area
- Emphasis on natural light both at check-in and in departures
- Access to 14 aircraft gates via high quality covered walkways, providing full protection
- from the elements
- Three large baggage reclaim belts
- Easy access to parking, taxis and buses for arriving and departing passengers
- Modular design which can be readily extended
- The aircraft parking area supporting the new terminal, which was constructed in 2008, can park
- up to 36 aircraft and is approximately the size of five Subiaco Ovals.
There are also a number of environmental features in the new terminal including:
- Rainwater harvesting and re-use
- A co-generation plant delivering energy and carbon efficiencies
- Underground delivery of ventilation to reduce energy costs
The tender document will be issued by Westralia Airports Corporation (WAC) today, with a closing
date of 20 May 2011. WAC expects to award the contract by July 2011 with construction of the
new terminal to be completed in 2013.
