Passenger Traffic Up 4.6% at Pittsburgh International in June
New service on Allegiant, Frontier, OneJet and Southwest a catalyst for passenger growth
Passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport climbed more than four percent in June and showed some of the biggest gains in more than eight years.
In June 2016, traffic totaled 780,863 passengers, the busiest month of June since 2008, and the largest growth in the month of June since 2001. June 2016 shows a 4.6 percent increase in traffic above June 2015.
The growth is largely due to air service gains on Allegiant to Savannah and New Orleans with expanded service to Myrtle Beach, as well as American to Cancun, OneJet to Hartford, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, Southwest to St. Louis and new routes on Frontier to five of Pittsburgh’s top destinations, said Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis.
“We’re pleased to be able to deliver this new air service that has been in demand and that the community is responding to it,” Cassotis said. “Air service will continue to be a major focus and we’re looking forward to additional service announcements in the coming months.”
Year-to-date total airport passenger traffic is up 1.6 percent, as 3,961,802 passengers traveled through June, compared with 3,899,583 who traveled during the same time period in 2015. All scheduled carriers combined are up more than two percent.
Other recent gains include new nonstop service to Los Angeles started by Southwest this week. Last week, Southern Airways announced new nonstop service to Harrisburg beginning in October. Additionally, Vacation Express has announced new service to Montego Bay, Jamaica in 2017, bringing the total number of destinations served nonstop from PIT to 58, up from 37 in 2014.
