Passenger Traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport Continues to Increase in January 2017
The Pittsburgh region's strong and diversified economy combined with a growing air service portfolio are key to recent increases in passengers
Following increases in 2014, 2015 and 2016, passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport is again on the rise in the first month of 2017.
Statistics for January show a 5.2 percent increase in travelers from January 2016. Total passengers through the airport were 588,963 compared to 560,047 passengers in January 2016. Total aircraft operations were also up 5.5 percent compared to last January, and cargo volume was up 5.9 percent for the month.
Scheduled flights and available seats also increased as a result of new service to Austin, TX and San Juan, Puerto Rico on Allegiant that began in mid-December, as well as increased service capacity on United to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and JetBlue to Boston.
“New air service always stimulates the market,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis. “Our passengers have been very responsive to our new service options. We’re pleased with their success and happy in the growth of this ongoing partnership.”
Since starting service in Pittsburgh in February 2015, Allegiant has successfully added destinations, crew, aircraft and travelers. The low cost carrier now serves 10 top leisure destinations from PIT including Orlando, Myrtle Beach and Savannah, with new nonstop flights to Destin/Ft. Walton Beach starting in May.
