Pittsburgh International Airport Marks 3 Consecutive Years of Passenger Growth
PITTSBURGH — Not since the 1980s has Pittsburgh International Airport seen a streak like its current 36-month stretch of increased passenger growth.
April passenger traffic increased 3 percent, equating to a total of 805,299 passengers, marking the airport’s 36 th consecutive month of year-over-year passenger growth, primarily in origin-and-destination traffic.
This streak is the longest since the airport saw 44 months of consecutive growth in passenger traffic, a trend that ended in 1986.
In addition, total available seats for the month of April increased 4.9 percent, with 184 weekday departures on nonstop routes that offered more than 18,000 available seats total. Pittsburgh has nonstop service to 63 airports, including year-round service to London-Heathrow that began in April. Delta Air Lines will add daily direct service to Raleigh/Durham in June.
Ultra-low cost carriers have continued to grow as well, now comprising about 11 percent of traffic at PIT. Spirit celebrated its 1 millionth passenger since starting service at PIT two years ago. In addition, Allegiant Air launched nonstop service to Knoxville, Tennessee, earlier this month.
