Bumper to bumper Easter at Wellington Airport
Easter is the busiest time of the year for Airports with all travel compressed into a few days.
Wellington Airport asks Wellingtonians to please be patient and allow extra time when travelling through the Airport or picking up friends and family.
Some delays were experienced in the road system on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Wellington Airport apologises for any inconvenience caused to people by the traffic delays – that were up to 15 minutes at times.
Wellington Airport has planned improvements to its road network to increase capacity all travellers and their meeters and farewellers.
Some additional capacity is available by limiting through traffic on Stewart Duff Drive during busy periods. 20% of all Wellington Airport traffic using Stewart Duff drive is non-airport traffic causing congestion at the front of the terminal.
In the longer term, redesigning the car park and road layout will be required to provide capacity to meet the expected growth in travel.
Car parking is being actively managed to meet customer’s needs. On Wednesday the airport’s Terminal car park reached near capacity, but people were positioned to direct customers to free spaces and alternative parking options including the Long Term and the Heart car parks.
Joanna Sharpe, Manager of Retail, Concessions and Transport at Wellington Airport said, “With the new online parking booking system we have been able to forecast that the days over Easter weekend will also have to be managed and have arranged for extra staffing to assist and accommodate all Wellington Airport parkers.”
