Continuous upgrades planned for KUL Airport Runways
Upgrades Will Be Done On All Three Runways At KL International Airport (KUL) Within The Next Five Years As Outlined In The KUL Runway Sustainability Master Plan With The Aim Of Boosting Safety And Service Levels
Sepang – Upgrades are being planned for all three runways at KL International Airport (KUL) within the next five years with the aim of boosting safety and service levels. The upgrades will be implemented according to the schedule outlined in the KUL Runway Sustainability Master plan and will involve comprehensive maintenance works such as overlaying works which may require temporary full or night closures of the runways. The maintenance works will address potential future issues such as airfield pavement roughness identified through the Boeing Bump Index analysis conducted recently.
According to Malaysia Airports acting Group CEO Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin, “This is part of our obligation in ensuring that runway sustainability and safety at all our airports are maintained on a continuous basis. Runway 3 will be upgraded in September 2019, while Runway 1 and 2 will be upgraded in 2021 and 2023 respectively.”
Raja Azmi added that it is Malaysia Airports’ aim to give advance notice to all relevant stakeholders although it is still too soon to tell how long the temporary closures of each runway will be.
“The length of time for the temporary closure will be dependent on whether we do full or night closures. Due announcement will be made after a joint decision has been reached by all the relevant airport stakeholders including the airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). Our intention in giving advance notice of at least a year is so that airlines can plan their seasonal flight schedules accordingly to avoid flight cancellation that may cause great inconvenience to passengers,” he explained further.
Malaysia Airports is conducting regular discussion and engagement with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth execution of the KUL Runway Sustainability Master Plan. It is the organisation’s goal to ensure minimum disruption to flight operations and the least inconvenience to passengers.
