Runway 3 at KUL Undergoes Upgrades as Planned
01 OCTOBER 2019
SEPANG – As previously announced in September 2018, Runway 3 at KL International Airport (IATA Code: KUL) will undergo pavement rehabilitation works starting from 0100 hours on 2 October 2019. This work is undertaken according to the plans outlined in the KUL Runway Sustainability Master Plan.
Runway 3 will undergo a combination of partial and night closures for the next 9.5 months until 15 July 2020. This exercise will mainly involve pavement overlaying works that will address potential future issues such as airfield pavement roughness that was identified through the Boeing Bump Index analysis conducted last year.
According to the group chief executive officer of Malaysia Airports, Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin, the team has taken all the necessary measures to inform all stakeholders involved ahead of time, especially the airline partners, to ensure that the passenger journey remains seamless throughout the initiative, as well as to allow the least disruption to flight operations and management for the airlines. Several options were presented during the engagement sessions with regards to the duration of maintenance works and the duration of 9.5 months was the option agreed upon by all stakeholders, including airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).
He added, “This initiative to upgrade the runways is crucial to ensure the continuous safety and service levels of flight operations at KUL. In doing this, our focus is also to make sure that passenger travel plans are not disrupted. This was why we had made the announcement one year ahead of time and held multiple engagement sessions with our airlines partners and the (CAAM) throughout the last 12 months so that airlines can plan their flight schedules accordingly and avoid last minute cancellations that may cause inconvenience to passengers. Once works are completed on Runway 3, we will then proceed with upgrading works for Runway 1 and 2 in 2021 and 2023 respectively.”
