SEPANG, 17 DECEMBER 2009 - Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (Malaysia Airports) today unveiled the newly completed Satellite Retail Optimisation Project (SROP) at KL International Airport (KLIA). The Satellite Building has been given a major facelift and passengers can now look forward to a more exciting and unique shopping experience.

The Satellite Building, which features international departure and arrival gates, also houses an array of retail and F&B selection in KLIA. Malaysia Airports embarked on the SROP in May 2008 in an effort to transform the airport beyond just its physical appearance and creating more retail space. The overall ambience and experience for passengers were given priority.

"Our mission through the SROP and all the supporting activities is to transform KLIA so that people will come to know KLIA as more than just an airport. The need to be more creative and innovative in our approach is of paramount importance as we focus on putting the passengers first in everything that we do," said Malaysia Airports Chairman, YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Dr Aris Othman who officiated the event.

"The SROP enabled us to make changes to the physical appearance of the shops, while adding more variety and brands as well as more choices. We now have more shops and more variety for our customers. The layout of the retail space has also been changed to make it easier for the customers to shop and move from one outlet to another. We also incorporated other features to make the experience at KLIA uniquely its own," Tan Sri Aris continued.

The SROP also included the building of a walkway through the forest reserve at the centre core of the Satellite Building and creating a Circular Viewing Gallery at the Mezzanine Level.

The creation of the KLIA Jungle Broadwalk enhanced the airport's concept of 'Airport In The Forest, Forest In The Airport' by offering passengers the refreshing experience of walking through a natural forest reserve. This is the same forest reserve that has been in there since before the Satelite Building was built. The KLIA Jungle Broadwalk functions as more than just recreational walk path. It also makes it more convenient for passenger to access shops within the Satellite Building as it is now possible to walk through the jungle via the Broadwalk.

Retail outlets at the Satellite Building were reorganised on the Passenger Level. Shops ranging from renowned brand names, souvenir and gift outlets to daily necessities and toiletries can be found on the same level as the platform for the aero train. This level also offers three cafes for passengers seeking a quick bite or drink.

The Mezzanine Level houses food and beverage outlets and it features a wide selection of cuisine; from local fare and fast food to casual dining.

"We want to encourage passengers to shop and dine more at our airports. In order to achieve this, we must ensure that they have a positive and distinctive experience at every occasion of their interaction with us. And this includes, added variety, more accessibility and convenience," said Tan Sri Aris.

To coincide with the launch of this project, Malaysia Airports is also introducing the 'Take Off. Touch Down. Shop' campaign to promote a favourable shopping experience at the airport.

"Like any other business, we need to ensure customer satisfaction, and this includes offering the best customer experience at our airports. We are working towards having passengers view KLIA as not just a means of getting to their destination but as being part of their destination," said Tan Sri Aris.

Malaysia Airports through its Commercial Services Division is also extending this new shopping campaign to other international airports, namely, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Kuching International Airport and Penang International Airport.

Malaysia Airports is committed to promoting the shopping and dining experience at airports. Through the years, activities to promote shopping and dining at the KLIA and LCCT-KLIA have been amplified to engage and further create an unparalleled shopping experience for airport visitors and passengers.

The launch of the newly completed SROP and the 'Take Off. Touch Down. Shop.' campaign are among two on the list of line-ups by Malaysia Airports to engage its customers.
