AUGUST PERFORMANCE TOPS BUMPER SUMMER FOR GLASGOW AIRPORT
• 12.3% increase in August passenger numbers • Almost three million passengers during peak summer months
Glasgow Airport has reported its 30th consecutive month of growth after 878,515 passengers travelled through its doors in August, representing an increase of 12.3% compared to the same period last year.
Almost three million passengers used Glasgow Airport during the peak summer months of June, July and August ensuring the airport also enjoyed its busiest summer in seven years.
A strong demand for London and regional services saw domestic traffic increase by 10.7%, while international traffic grew by 13.4% due to strong uptake on both long haul and European services.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “August was an outstanding month for Glasgow Airport. As well as unveiling new routes to Salzburg and Exeter, we officially opened our new £3.3 million east pier extension enables us to accommodate an additional 750,000 passengers per year.
“Yet again, August proved to be another busy month for Glasgow and we benefitted from the city’s continued success in attracting a series of major events. These included the UDO World Street Dancing Championships and the World Pipe Band Championships, as well as a number of international conferences.
“September is already shaping up to be equally exciting with the launch of our new Virgin Atlantic service to Las Vegas, as well as two new routes to Vilnius and Lublin with Wizz Air. The city will also welcome thousands of visitors for the Davis Cup at the Emirates Arena which reinforces Glasgow’s position as a top sporting destination.”
Glasgow Airport’s ongoing efforts in securing new routes for the city and Scotland have continued to yield hugely positive results. Earlier this month it received the welcome news that Air Canada Rouge will come on board in 2016 with direct flights to its Toronto hub and Air Transat confirmed it will launch a new Montreal service next summer. Wizz Air also announced it will launch a twice weekly service to the Romanian capital of Bucharest in May 2016.
