Leeds Bradford Airport confirms Airsafe to supply new complete LED fittings for its runway

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is undergoing a major project to replace all Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) over the next two to three years, replacing existing AGL fittings and circuits along the runway.

Contractors began the work over the winter period, with works taking place overnight to ensure minimal disruption to passengers. All fittings will be replaced during the project.

All existing fittings are being replaced with the LED lights across the runway including the Edge, Centreline, PAPIs, Touchdown Zone, Supplementary Approach, Threshold and Elevated Approach. There are also stop bar LED fittings for the Ring of Reds on taxiway approaches.

All lights are being replaced to ensure that Leeds Bradford Airport is at the very forefront of airfield technology as the airport continues to grow and develop in the coming years as part of its Masterplan ambitions to welcome 7.1m passengers a year by 2030.

Richard Duncan, Head of Airfield Services at LBA, said: “This is a major ongoing project for the coming two-three years at LBA and upgrading the light fittings will further enhance the smooth running of our operations. It is essential to continually upgrade fittings as we get busier and so it’s great to see this project get underway. In addition, the LED lights are more efficient.

“Passengers will not see any disruption to flights due to this work, as it will only be carried out during quieter operational times. We have worked closely with all of our airlines to ensure that they fully understand how the work will be undertaken.”

The contract announcement for Airsafe to supply the LED fittings came earlier this year and was awarded after LBA published a contract notice in the Official Journal of the European Union (reference 173622-2016) to invite expressions of interest in a proposed tender invitation for the supply only of new complete LED fittings.

Airsafe Airport Equipment Co.,Ltd (Airsafe) expressed its interest at early stage once the contract notice was published and passed the Pre-Qualification session by demonstrating its strong financial and economic standing, and technical capabilities. Airfield Equipment & Services SL (AES) as the poster of Airsafe in Europe took the role to show LBA the performance of Airsafe’s product installed in several airports in Europe.

Mr. Wuguanglie, the CEO of Airsafe, said: “LBA gives Airsafe an opportunity to demonstrate our strength of LED AGL in Europe and all over the world. Airsafe will take this chance to work with LBA, and AES to make this project as a benchmark in LED AGL industry.”
