Hermes Airports achieves a new milestone

Larnaka and Pafos International Airports in Cyprus, have successfully upgraded to Level 4+ Transition of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Operated by Hermes Airports, Pafos and Larnaka airports have established an absolute emissions reduction target that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions as a minimum, and moved forward with delivering the necessary reductions. Furthermore, the airports have aligned their carbon management strategy with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The two airports, that joined the programme in 2017 and achieved carbon neutrality in 2019, are committed to achieving net zero for emissions under their control by 2050. To reach this goal, they are implementing various initiatives that support environmental protection, and promote community engagement. Among the most notable projects is the construction of two major solar power plants at both airports. The 3.5 MWp installation at Larnaka Airport and the 1.1 MWp installation at Pafos Airport cover approximately 28% of their energy needs.

Further efforts include the installation of LED lighting, redesigning and optimising building systems such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and promoting energy conservation awareness across the airport community. Improved airside electricity management has been implemented, featuring charging stations for electric vehicles and ground support equipment powered by solar energy.

Hermes Airports also prioritises advanced waste management practices, collaborating with licensed providers to ensure compliance with legislative requirements. This collaboration extends to the integration of services for the collection, transportation, and treatment of various waste streams produced by airport operations.

Additionally, Hermes Airports is an active participant in the EU-funded TULIPS project, which commenced in January 2022. This project focuses on developing innovative solutions to facilitate the transition to low carbon mobility and enhance sustainability at airports.
