Two Key Projects for the Sustainable Development of Cyprus Airports

Hermes Airports continues its commitment to sustainable development, moving forward with two significant initiatives that strengthen its sustainability strategy. Through innovative technologies and international collaborations, the company aims to further reduce the environmental footprint of Larnaca and Paphos airports by adopting green practices.

Recently, Hermes Airports received approval from the European Union to participate in the installation of Electric Ground Power Units at Cyprus’ two international airports. This initiative is part of the European funding program for alternative fuel infrastructure, with Cyprus included among the 39 approved projects.

The investment, will be implemented through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). As part of the project, Larnaka Airport will receive 14 fixed and 17 mobile ground power units, while Paphos Airport will be equipped with 17 fixed and 5 mobile units.

With this new infrastructure, aircraft—while waiting for their next flight—will be able to receive electrical power instead of using their engines or diesel-powered ground units, thereby reducing both noise and carbon dioxide emissions while improving the energy efficiency of the airports.

At the same time, as a member of the European TULIPS consortium, Hermes Airports is working on the development of innovative technologies for airport sustainability. As part of this initiative, the company recently upgraded the offices of its Health & Safety department by applying circular economy principles, including the reuse of construction materials.

The company plans to adopt additional green technologies in the coming years, reinforcing its environmental management and sustainable development policies. These actions align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, ensuring that Cyprus' two airports continue to operate responsibly towards both the environment and society.
