LAUNCH OF THE CHARLEROI-GDANSK ROUTE
19/06/2015
The first flight for Hungarian airline, Wizz Air, heading to Gdańsk, took off on Friday 19 June 2015 from Brussels South Charleroi Airport. The plane arriving from Poland touched down at BSCA at 12.05, setting off to Gdańsk at 12.35. The first flights from and to Gdańsk were a great success; the occupancy rate was higher than 80%.
Capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Gdańsk is Poland’s sixth biggest city. Located on the Baltic coast, it is the principal seaport of the country. The new route linking up Charleroi and Gdańsk boasts two flights a week.
This makes Gdańsk the second Polish city made available from Brussels South Charleroi Airport by Wizz Air. Two more new destinations are due to be added to the range later in 2015, namely Lublin (Poland – from 14/09/2015) and Debrecen (Hungary – from 18/12/2015).
To mark the occasion, a number of events were put on both inside the terminal and on the runway. At the boarding gate, passengers heading for Poland were treated to some Belgian chocolates and Polish sweet treats, while the plane flying in from Gdańsk was baptised by BSCA’s fire department.
Jean-Jacques Cloquet, BSCA’s CEO, is thrilled to see a new route added to the network already available from Brussels South Charleroi Airport: “Wizz Air is an airline that’s very active in Charleroi and we can only congratulate them for theirconsistent development and growth. The launch of the Charleroi – Gdańsk route is a major coup for our airport. Thanks to this new destination, Polish communities in Belgium, the southern Netherlands, northern France, Luxembourg and eastern Germany will be able to enjoy direct flights to Gdańsk. We are delighted to be able to offer them that, and we hope to see a considerable number of passengers taking the opportunity to discover Gdańsk, its culture, its architecture and nearby seaside resorts.”
The route between Charleroi and Gdańsk is also generating a buzz at the Polish Tourist Office in Belgium. Dominika Szulc, the Tourist Office’s Director, explains: “Wizz Air’s new destination is great news for the Polish Tourist Office. It means that we can broaden our promotion of Poland and show Belgian tourists one of Poland’s three most beautiful cities. Gdańsk has enormous potential as far as tourism is concerned: this old Hanseatic city by the sea, with its history of fighting for freedom thanks to Solidarnosc and Sopot, a charming nearby seaside resort. Gdańsk is the perfect destination for a thrilling city break. The Charleroi - Gdańsk route also gives Belgians the opportunity to explore northern Poland, an area renowned for its stunning tourist attractions: Malbork Castle, a UNESCO site, the Masurian Lake District with its 2,000 lakes, the white sandy beaches of Pomerania, Bialowieza – Europe’s last primeval forest…. To sum it up, these flights to Gdańsk will give us the chance to show Belgians a fascinating side of Poland, with these regions that not many people know about.”
To coincide with the launch of the Charleroi – Gdańsk route, the Polish Tourist Office, in collaboration with Wizz Air and Brussels South Charleroi Airport, is launching a competition that will give winners a 5 day/4 night stay (Monday to Friday) for two people in Sopot, a seaside resort on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea.
The winners will enjoy VIP service at the airport, including parking, breakfast and priority when it comes to going through security and boarding. The return ticket to Gdańsk has been kindly paid for by Wizz Air. Once you’re there, you will be able to enjoy a Spa & Wellness experience at the five-star hotel, Sofitel Grand Sopot. You will also be served a delicious breakfast at the Art Deco restaurant, as well as unlimited access to the luxurious Grand Spa. Last but not least, the winners will be offered a free treatment.
