All Eyes in Portugal Atlantic Coast Route along the Portuguese coast had been approved
22nd July 2017
July is shaping up to be a good month for Portugal. Not only did their football team win the European Championship for the first time ever but their section of the EuroVelo network has now been extended by over 900 km along the country's beautiful Atlantic Coast.
Earlier this year it was announced that an application to extend EuroVelo 1 - Atlantic Coast Route along the Portuguese coast had been approved. This extension formally joined the network on 1st July following the completion of the signing of the route and the launch of a new website dedicated to EuroVelo in Portugal.
The extension is 924 km long and connects many attractions to the EuroVelo network for the first time, including
- The country's exciting capital city Lisbon;
- Attractive coastal landscapes and inviting beaches;
- Aveiro District - Portugal's 'little Netherlands';
- Porto with its lively Ribeira (riverside) district.
You can find out how to discover all these attactive destinations on the new website EuroVelo Portugal, which provides detailed guides to the different sections of the route, maps, points of interest and even downloadable GPS tracks. The useful website even boasts information about public transport connections, events taking place close to the route and what signing to look out for on the route.
In addition to developing the website, over the past few months the Portuguese National EuroVelo Coordinator, Federação Portuguesa de Cicloturismo e Utilizadores de Bicicleta (FPCUB), have been working with the relevant authorities to implement signage along the extension. FPCUB intend to work with national and regional partners to continue to develop the route over the coming years.
So the route is ready, what are you waiting for?!"
