Tampere Goes Green in Honor of St. Patrick's Day
This year Tampere will go green to celebrate Ireland’s national day, St. Patrick’s Day. The newest public sauna in Finland, Sauna Restaurant Kuuma, and the Näsinneula observation tower in Tampere will be taking part in the 10th anniversary of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening Initiative alongside iconic landmarks across the globe. Further afield, sites that have gone green for the campaign include the Colosseum in Rome, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris and the Great Wall of China.
What started as a national religious holiday in Ireland to commemorate St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick’s Day has since become a global celebration of Irish culture.
The city of Tampere in Finland has been sending its greetings to Ireland through the greenings annually since 2016. Tampere’s greenings have been attracting international attention by bringing the northern exotics to the campaign, for example, with ice fishing and dog sledding by the lighthouse in the middle of the frozen lake Näsijärvi going green. The man behind the greening idea in Tampere is Irish-born Oliver Hussey from Business Tampere.
This year Tampere, the sauna capital of the world, is greening Finland’s newest public sauna – Sauna Restaurant Kuuma. The sauna is lit with green both inside and out and sauna goers can enjoy ice swimming in a small pool made in the frozen lake, all in green flames.
”Sauna is the natural place for us to send our Greening greetings from” comments Olga Javits, marketing & communications coordinator at Visit Tampere. ”The public sauna culture is very unique in Tampere and is an inseparable part of the local lifestyle.”
The main landmark of Tampere and the tallest observation tower in the Nordics, Näsinneula, is also green from March 11th – 17th to celebrate Ireland.
